Family
Her parents met in Iceland. Laufey’s mother, Lin Wei, is from China and is a violinist by profession who relocated to Iceland after getting a job in an orchestra there. Her father, Jón Sigurgeirsson, is a native Icelander who is a finance executive by profession. Her grandfather, Lin Yaoji, was also a violin educator in China. Laufey’s maternal side influenced her to pursue a music career, and the rest is history.
She has an identical twin sister named Júnía Lín Jónsdóttir, who was born 11 minutes after Laufey. Her younger sister Júnía is also a trained violinist who is working as her creative director. Laufey shares a great bond with her sister and once jokingly mentioned that her sister is like her “pet”, as she is the youngest in the family.

She spent her early childhood in Reykjavík, Iceland. It is not confirmed, but most probably because of her mother’s career, they relocated to Washington, D.C in 2006. At that time, Laufey was seven. After staying at the place for two years, they again came back to Reykjavík in 2008. Here she studied singing and the cello at Reykjavík College of Music and graduated from high school in 2018. Right after graduation, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts, in the autumn of 2018 and enrolled at Berklee College of Music on a presidential scholarship.
The college provides Full tuition, on-campus housing, and mandatory fees to students who have elite musical potential based on the live audition and interviews. Because of her exceptional skills, she graduated a year early in 2021 instead of 2022. Right after that, she moved to Los Angeles in 2021 to show the world her amazing singing talent. In December of that year, her first major singing event came when she performed at the Moroccan Lounge in front of 250 people.
